Abstract

Through a case study of a primiparous father, who was interviewed in the 6th and 20th month of his daughter's life, this study investigated the fatherly subjective aspects regarding breastfeeding and weaning. His reports revealed that the father and his daughter vied for maternal desire, at the same time as the father and his wife vied for the child, which was associated with the father's history. The reports suggest that in the process of becoming a father breastfeeding and weaning are also important, because breastfeeding can be associated to the mother-infant body relationship and the difficulties experienced by the man as a third party.
