Abstract

A lot has been written about the relation between language and literature and about the role of the literary text in teaching and learning foreign languages. In this article we will try to reflect about how have been developed convictions about the function of literature in language teaching, taking as example the University of São Paulo and the creation of its course of Letters, in order to illustrate some characteristics  of the traditional methods. Then, we will analyze how the role of literature in the didactics of foreign languages has changed until the communicative approach.
