Abstract

The following text is the first chapter of "Scientific Thought as a Planetary Phenomenon," which was to be the most complete presentation of the noosphere theory, and which began to be written by Vernadsky between 1937 and 1938, but was repeatedly reworked during the terrible years of World War II. It may be noted that several passages are still sketches that ought to be deepened, but there was no time. It was only published in full in Russian in 1991 and the translation was made from the English edition by the Vernadsky Foundation in 1997
