Abstract

The development of brazilian railway industry in the first half of the 20th century, was due to a conjunction of factors that would be decisive for the progressive technological modernization of this sector. Among these factors, it is intended to analyze the impact of the workforce training strategies, adopted by São Paulo railway companies since 1920 and in conjunction with international scientific management standards. As will be shown, the consolidation of professional education in the industrial railway sector was due, especially, to the work of engineer Roberto Mange, creator of the Escola Profissional Mecânica do Liceu de Artes e Ofícios de São Paulo, subsequently replaced by Centro Ferroviário de Ensino e Formação Profissional and finally continued by Serviço Nacional de Aprendizagem Profissional, prevailing the elements of rational work organization in the teaching methodology conveyed by these institutions.
