Abstract

This article presents a study of two late works by Henry James, the story "The jolly corner" (1908) and the novel The ivory tower (1917), which describes and opposes two key formal principles, "discretion" and "demolition", analyzing their different aesthetical possibilities and critical functions in relation to American money culture of the early 1900s.
