Abstract

This article offers a brief analysis of the opera Undine (1816), composed by the German composer and writer E.T.A. Hoffmann (1776-1822), with libretto by Friedrich de La Motte-Fouqué (1777-1843), in order to verify the relationship between this work and the reflection on opera carried out by Hoffmann in his critical writings. In many of his fictional essays, as well as in his music criticism, Hoffmann develops a discussion on issues concerning the operatic genre, using the term "romantic" to designate his aesthetic ideals. Considering the fact that Undine is held as one of the first German romantic operas, we propose an analysis of the following questions: what did Hoffmann mean by “romantic opera”? And to what extent does Undine reflect his aesthetic ideals, specifically regarding the libretto and its relationship with music? It is intended to point out this probable relationship between theory and practice as a possible way of investigating the roots of romanticism in the opera of German tradition.
