Abstract

Introduction: Among the risk factors for the occurrence of gastric cancer, infection by H. pylori stands out. Therefore, the objective is to compile this relation and the factors that interfere with it in a systematic way to facilitate its access and understanding. Materials and methods: This is a systematic review. Searches were performed in PubMed, LILACS and SciELO databases. Original articles in English, Portuguese and Spanish were included, and review articles, letters and editorials were excluded. Results: In the 15 studies included the investigation of 14 possible factors that influence the relationship between H. pylori infection and the development of gastric cancer was done: gender/sex, age, place of residence, consumption of alcohol, tobacco, of fruits and vegetables, supplementation with vitamin C, with vitamin E, with selenium, with iron and with garlic oil, pharmacological treatment against H. pylori, dyspepsia, and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Discussion: There was a high association between infection by H. pylori and gastric carcinogenesis, as well as the interference of dyspepsia, type 2 diabetes mellitus, iron depletion, lifestyle, and dietary habits in this relation. Conclusion: Therefore, H. pylori infection characterizes itself as an instrument for triggering and progression of this pathology.
