Abstract

The use of electronic cigarettes has become popular in recent years, with an increase in sales and use by young people and adolescents. This practice brings several harms to these users, such as the development of pre-cancerous diseases, specifically in the oral cavity and in the head and neck region. The objective of the present study was to carry out an integrative review of the published and indexed literature in recent years between 2016 and 2023. The Pubmed and Virtual Health Library (VHL) databases were used, searching for the terms “Electronic -cigarrete and harmful effects and oral cavity” in Pubmed and the terms “Electronic cigarette and oral cavity” in the Virtual Health Library. After applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, a careful reading and evaluation of the content of the articles was carried out, with 14 articles being included in our study. The results demonstrated that the substances present in electronic cigarettes are capable of modulating inflammatory responses and the expression of cytokines and interleukins related to pathogenic processes, compromising the local immune response of cells in the oral cavity. It is concluded, therefore, that the use of electronic cigarettes is proven to be harmful not only to the oral cavity, but also to the systemic health of the individual. Its use should be discouraged through oral health promotion and medical and dental professional guidance.
