The goal of this work is to approach the issue of temporality (as a cinematic and cultural phenomenon) from the perspective of two films, which, however different they may appear, meet in the common ground of topics such as time travel and teenage drama/comedy: Back to the Future (Robert Zemeckis, 1985) and Donnie Darko (Richard Kelly, 2001). With support from Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht’s thesis on the increase of contingency in postmodern experience, this paper endeavors an analysis of the peculiar temporal ambiences of both films, as well as their different conceptions of time and contingency.Downloads
