The amateur gesture in the cinema of Julio Bressane

Julio Bressane’s filmography is influenced by the use of home movies, amateur images and travelogues. In this article, we reflect on the presence of amateur gestures in his filmography based on three axes of analysis: 1) the subversion of family iconographies; 2) amateurism as an aesthetic and political force, and 3) the travelogue and the world’s cinematic geography. This film analysis approach also encompasses the complexities and the various meanings that amateur gestures can assume.
