Abstract

The discussion between the viability and profitability of small family and large business properties is important to highlight the sense of rural development. In Candiota and Hulha Negra municipalities, in Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil, there are different models of development in the field, on the one hand, the rural settlements are producing in agro-ecological way and on the other hand, large properties with forests to cellulose productions and extensive and business livestock. In that sense, this paper aims to discuss these models of production in rural areas, their potential and limits. It makes some observations for the future of this region, analyzing economic, socio-cultural and environmental aspects in an integrated manner, reflecting on the organization of agrarian space.
