In the late 1990s Françoise Héritierand Pierre Bourdieu published, with an interval of
only two years between them, Masculin/Feminin,
la pensée de la différence (1996), and La domination
masculine (1998), respectively. Dealing with the
hierarchical construction of the difference between
male and female, both books present a perspecti-
ve that is, if not skeptical, at least little optimistic
concerning the discourses that announce possible
displacements or even the erasure of “difference”.
Instead of pointing out the significant distance be-
tween these authors in dealing with the issue, this
article proposes a reflection on the topics in which
their perspectives converge.
