This paper describes the settings and practices of political groups in a municipality of the Sertão de Pernambuco (countryside of the state of Pernambuco, Brazil), from an intensive field research. This municipality is located in the Vale do Pajeú and its population is made up of about 79,000 inhabitants and 55,000 voters. The main feature of electoral politics is the existence of two political groups contesting elective positions; to each of these groups is recognized as having a leader as well as families and political parties that are linked to them. The intelligibility of actions of political groups in this approach seeks to take into account its complex and changeable combination, in which none of the elements shall be considered separately.
