The Position of Antecedent Hypothesis (PAH) proposed by Carminati (2002) states that in null subject languages the selection of an antecedent by the null subject or the overt subject of a subordinate clause depends on the structural position occupied by the antecedent in the main clause. Taking this hypothesis, we have carried out an empirical study intended to investigate whether it is realized in a similar way in both Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese (PB). The comparison of these two languages is especially important because the changes undergone by the pronominal system of PB in the last decades has led some authors to propose that PB is not a classical null subject language anymore. The results of a comprehension task and a production task administered to a group of native Spanish speakers and a group of PB speakers show similar patterns with respect to the PAH, which leads us to conclude that the differences between the two pronominal systems do not seem to have consequences for the way in which anaphora resolution resolves ambiguity.
