The novels Los ejércitos (2007) by the Colombian Evelio Rosero and Laberinto (2019) by the Mexican Eduardo Antonio Parra, describes the devastation and loss of an entire community at the hands of armed groups linked to organized crime. From the point of view of a schoolteacher, both novels expose the hopeless of the innocent civilian population witnessing the violence thrown upon them. This work analyzes, from the act of looking, the representation of violence in both novels. How does the act of looking vulnerates the witnesses to the massacre? What is the value or functionality of the schoolteacher as a privileged witness to the destruction of the community?
