In this study, we analyzed the demonstrative pronouns in the Spanish spoken in Lima and Buenos Aires based on the corpus of the NURC project, considering data from male informants in directed dialogues over three generations. Results reveal distinct patterns between these two varieties in relation to the three types of use (phoric, truncated and phatic). Some aspects are especially relevant: the higher frequency of phatics in Buenos Aires (35%) compared to Lima (8.9%), the highest prevalence of ese as phoric in Buenos Aires (81.3%) compared to Lima (60.2%) and the distribution in apparent time of phatic as a pattern of change in progress in Lima. These data reveal that the use of demonstrative pronouns can be a pattern to differentiate the varieties of Spanish.
