"Survival" refers to the continuity (or afterlife) and metamorphosis of ideas and images in opposition to their replacement by innovations in image and language. The idea introduces the problem of memory into the longue durée of history. It is an archaeological way of representing the anthropological field of ideas and images. It is not a property of works, but rather a potentiality that can be realized or achieved in a relation. According to Macedonio Fernández, it is not a translation of references but a translatability of relations.
