Abstract

In order to contribute with the debate about ethics, the following reflections aim to establish a dialogue with the principles making up "modernity", revealed through the laboriousness, frugality, and credibility categories, whose sounds still resonate at present, under other vibrations though, the latter however, already elaborated, re-elaborated, and exposed by the Protestant Reformation, according do Weber (2004), and Catholic Counter-Reformation, according to Gramsci (1979; 1984), both dating back to the ancient 16 th century. Such principles were further appropriated and assimilated by modern capitalism and the corresponding social formations. To achieve an easier course, the following dialogue was chosen developed along the following topics: debate, protestant ethics, laboriosness and honesty, frugality and punctuality, and, finally, the contemporary presence of the ethical principles inbuilt in these categories.
