Educating in religion: challenges for the transmission of values among muslims in São Paulo

Abstract

This article examines the strategies that the Moslem people use to face a problem that exists in any religious minority in Brazil: how to pass on to the new generations behavior reference values in agreement with their religious faith in a country mostly Catholic and almost totally Christian? In other words, this subject is closely related to the own Muslim community reproduction. The empirical material that supports this analysis is made of ten detailed interviews with Moslem people of different genders, ages, social and economical conditions and times of living in Brazil.
