The production of the rural-urban space and its refutations in the socio-environmental conflicts in the area of Suape, Pernambuco, Brazil

Abstract

The principal aim of this article is to show how the production of the rural-urban space in the capitalist context influence the social-environmental conflicts. The article analyses the contradictions of the industrial-urban development in the production of the space for reproduction and accumulation of the capital, as in the case of the Suape (Suape Industrial Complex in Pernambuco, Brazil), that affects twenty seven communities located in its area. These communities are formed by traditional populations of fishermen and small farmers that face the risk of loosing their land and cultural identity. In this context, social-environmental conflicts are forms of resistance, of struggle for the preservation of their rights to the place and, so, are consequence of an unequal process of appropriation and production of the space.
