Abstract

The purpose of this article is to analyze the connections and disconnections of the concept of time and human development, as well as to discuss its impact on education and on the teacher’s performance in the 21st century. Firstly, the concept of time based on Adorno and its possible relationships with the quality of life are explained. Secondly, it is presented the concept of social capital having as theoretical support Robert Putnam’s work, relating it to the concept of sustainable development based on Brundtland’s report. Afterwards, there is an analysis of those variables presented that would affect the school, its daily routine and its individuals, i.e., teachers and students. Finally, education and the related public policies are widely discussed, especially what concerns the teachers’ performance. The methodology was based on bibliographic research. Data collected allowed us to conclude that the analyzed scenario involves the presence of the World Bank, with the indication of “market practices” (after all, it is an institution with financial purposes), which justify the market logic-oriented actions, by which the “management” of education depends on statistical indicators, derived exclusively from assessments of students’ performance, rather than from the analysis of the educational process and its structural conditions. It was also possible to conclude that the professional performance of educational agents (specially the teachers) indicates and justifies what they do in their free time, i.e., free time is used because of their own work, their function.
