Abstract

This paper deals with Ribeiro Bastos and Lyra Sanjoanense Orchestras, non professional musical corporations of São João del Rei city. Both of them were grounded in 18th Century and since their beginning were linked to the religious brotherhoods of the city. Also, both of them have been devoted to the liturgical Music for the Catholical service. They play the same role until nowadays and are still related to the brotherhoods, beside what they also can be understood as tools for the social affirmation and identity for middle and low classes of São João del Rei. Musical contents and values related to the social affirmation and identity are transmitted through Non Formal Education.
