This paper aims to provide a conceptual overview that supports international initiatives to promote media literacy policies, which include the promotion of abilities to access, evaluate and use both new and old media, connecting the development of technical, cultural and political skills. In doing so, it retrieves UNESCO initiatives, from the early 80s to the present, and also complements the scenario with the actions carried out by the European Union and the Ofce of Communications, the British media regulator. At the end, the paper presents the UNESCO’s curriculum for teacher training in media and Information Literacy.Downloads
