Policies and conditions for the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Based on the studies carried out by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) on Chatbots and Generative Artificial Intelligence in Relation to Academic Publications, Revista Comunicação & Educação delimits the following submission and evaluation rules:

1. Chatbots may not be listed as authors or co-authors of any article submitted to the Communication & Education Journal. No AI tool should be used in the generation of texts that make up the structure of the article to be submitted to the journal.

Chatbots do not meet the criteria for authorship, as they are unable to provide final approval of the version to be published, take responsibility for the work submitted, understand conflicts of interest or manage copyright and license agreements.

2. If an AI tool is used to collect information, produce graphs, analyze databases, among other functions related to the support and systematization of elements used to produce the article, authors must be transparent about its purpose, as well as specifying which chatbot was used and other information about its application in the production of the article.

Authors who use AI tools in the production of images or graphic elements of the article, data collection and analysis, among other functions that do not categorize the text production of the article, should be transparent by disclosing both in the Abstract and in the Materials and Methods (or similar section) the type of chatbot used, the function performed by the AI tool and how this process took place.

In order to enable scientific analysis, including replication and identification of falsification, information on the use of the AI tool must be made available in full, also including the specifics of the tool, search results, the time and date of the query.

3. Authors are fully responsible for the content of their manuscript, including the research, organization and analysis of the data and information that make up the article. They are therefore responsible for any breach of publication ethics.

4. Under no circumstances should the editors and referees of Revista Comunicação & Educação use AI tools to evaluate and analyze the articles submitted to the journal.

If any AI tool is used during the process of analyzing and evaluating submissions, editors and reviewers must inform the journal of its use (according to item 2) and be aware that the evaluation/analysis provided will be disregarded from the editorial process.
