The objective of this work was to investigate the knowledge of mothers and nursery school assistants concerning the language development of children from zero to twenty-four monthsof age and the relation of that knowledge with the educational background of these caretakers. The following methods were used: analytical transverse study perforrned with a nonprobabilistic sample of 200 mothers and 50 nursery school assistants, through a protocol which contained thirteen questions about language development of children in this age group. In the mothers group^? the frequency of right answers increased according to the educational background in only four ~uestions. The results obtained in the nursery school assistants group were below expectations, when compared to the group of mothers with the same educational background. It was concluded
that mothers and nursery school assistants were able to observe the emergence of meaningful markers of language development of children from zero to twenty-four months of age.
