This paper aims to present an unprecedented edition, with an introductory study, of the work Preservativo das bexigas [...], by the Portuguese doctor Manoel Joaquim Henriques de Paiva, published in 1801. It is the first written in Portuguese to publicize and defend the smallpox vaccine, developed by Edward Jenner at the end of the 18th century. With this work, Henriques de Paiva sougth to list the benefits of the vaccine and to convince the population “in all the provinces of Portugal and its domains, especially in Brazil, where thousands and thousands of people are victims of the ordinary bladders”, to “put this wonderful discovery into practice”. Thus, the edition historically situates and sheds light on a relevant document from the time of the application of the first smallpox vaccines in Brazil and Portugal. In addition, it is also the purpose of this work to stimulate the discussion about the role of specialists in the popularization of certain medical procedures, since the Preservativo das bexigas [...] is a pedagogical piece about vaccination.
