FAR BEYOND CYBERPUNK: REFLECTIONS ON RETROFUTURISTIC FICTION

This essay analyzes the rise and manifestations of Science Fiction subgenre called Retrofuturistic fiction. It rose in the 1980s from cyberpunk and the reflection on end of the century anxieties in relation to information systems advances and the worsening of social inequalities. Cyberpunk was then established as one of the most representative forms of Science Fiction at the end of 20th century. In the early 1990s, cyberpunk fostered the rise of steampunk – first retrofuturistic expression - that examines the impact of 20th and 21st century technological innovations in 19th century contexts. From steampunk, other retrofuturistic expressions were created, exploring the influence of future anticipations in the past of different ages. Within this scenario, this essay is justified by the absence of academic reflections in Brazil on the prominent situation retrofuturism has in 21st century Brazilian Science fiction.
