Abstract

This study consists of a Discourse Analysis about “Atraente” – Chiquinha Gonzaga's first composition, released in 1887 – and “Grupo Chiquinha Gonzaga” – a choro group created and directed by the composer herself – in order to see how the narratives about both musical events can constitute biographical and autobiographical sources on the composer and its art. I want to show the modifications, permanences, contradictions and transformations that reveal aspects around the gender, race and class relations that constituted Brazilian music as a field of truth, knowledge and power.
