The Gay Olympic Games were founded in 1982 in the United States to bring together sporting practitioners who did not meet up with compulsory heterosexual norms. The event gathers male homosexuals, lesbians, bisexuals, transvestites, transsexuals and others, including heterosexuals. The games have been held every four years for over 30 years; and they drive forward the debate on gender and sexual identities in the sporting arena, which has been traditionally discriminatory and homophobic. This chapter aims to present some anthropological considerations on the event, and also to bring back some specific ethnographic experiences the author had in three international editions of the Gay Games, so as to discuss gender and sexuality representations in sport.Downloads
