Complications related to respiratory system are not uncommon after major surgeries and increase morbidity and mortality. Among the most frequent are atelectasis, pneumonia, respiratory failure and pulmonary thromboembolism. In this article we revised in brief the general aspects of pathophysiology, clinical presentation, diagnosis and clinical management of these conditions.
