The purpose ofthis article isto examine the range o f certain categorires o f analysis o f photographies, by means o f an exploration o f cerain aspects of the compositional style of French photographer Robert Doisneau (1912/1994): we are speci:ficaly concemed with the role exherted by ambiguity, proper to the visual situations generated by his photographs, in the con:figuration of an e.ffect of discourse to these images (these transformed in the succedanea of short narratives, almost always tinctured with comic humour). We intend to evaluate the efficacy of that ambíguity, departing from notions such as that of necessary incompleteness ofthe visible aspects ofvisual representatíons, together with the consequential cooperation that it demands from the part ofthe beholder (notions mainly derived from the lessons of Gombrich and Goodmen on the ontology of representation).Downloads
