The music video as a prioritized format for promoting and advertising the music industry reveals a great potential for shaping gender identities due to its ability to capture the attention of young and adolescent audiences. In this work, we study the presence of non-binary gender through a symbolic analysis of music videos from two references of queer identity, David Bowie and Lil Nas X. The choice of two artists who have succeeded in different historical moments contributes to the reflection on the possible historical evolution of the expression of individuality through non-binary gender. Ancient representations are more anecdotal and associated with the fantastic without intentions of delving deeper into it. Nowadays, we find more obvious representations of gender crisis, something that, in broad terms, could be the result of the individual’s identity crisis in the context of postmodernity.
