This article aims to understand the effects of meanings on the discursive ethos and the consequent projection of the consumer subject in two Brazilian newspaper editorials at decisive moments of the country›s political history, namely: “Basta!” (CORREIO DA MANHÃ, 1964) and “Chegou a hora de dizer: basta!” (O ESTADO DE S. PAULO, 2016). From the categories of analysis “government”, “president”, “democracy” and “people”, the similarities, continuities and dissociation between the two discourses were analyzed, having the French Discourse Analysis as a theoretical-methodological path.
