Abstract

The work we are to present corresponds to the preliminary results of an investigation that aims to study the translation of regional lexicon of Brazilian northeast Portuguese, taking as corpus Os sertões (Cunha 2002) and its translation into Spanish. It is an investigation guided by the Lexicology scientific principles (Izquerdo; Oliveira 1998; Isquerdo 2007) and it intends to schedule the regional vocabulary, structuring it in Lexical Fields (Coseriu 1991 [1977], 1979) in order to analyze how this very vocabulary was translated into Spanish considering the discussions on Translation Modalities (Aubert 1998, 2006). It is known that a language lexicon can be spread in many ways and that literature is one of those. Euclides da Cunha’s work transcended Brazilian and Portuguese language frontiers, being translated into various languages and cultures, fact responsible for letting people know Brazilian northeast sociocultural reality through its regional lexicon. This study might contribute to a better understanding when it comes to Brazilian Portuguese and to comprehend how the Brazilian northeast social reality is being translated into other cultures and contexts.
