Abstract

In this essay we present our complete translation of the poem “Lesbos” by Charles Baudelaire. The commentary is divided in four parts whose function is to describe and discuss the poem and the translation. In the section “Situation of ‘Lesbos’”, we aim to relate the poem with the broader horizon of The flowers of evil as a whole; in “Baudelaire in Brazil”, we contextualize some important previous translations; in “A word about the alexandrine”, we go over a few translation challenges regarding metrics; and in “Final considerations: liberties” we wrap up the essay focusing on our intention to value formal precision and cohesion vis-à-vis the poem’s sensuality.
