Pilar do comunismo ou escritor exótico? A recepção dos romances de Jorge Amado na Polônia

Abstract

This article analyzes the translations of the novels of Jorge Amado made in Poland. Amado became very well-known in Poland and was the most-translated Brazilian author. His novels were first translated in 1949, and, until the end of the period of socialist realism, in the middle of the 1950s, translations of his works were frequently published and reprinted. Translations of his work stopped being published in 1958, but they once again became part of the literary system in 1968. And until 1993 they were published, but with less frequency than in the previous period. This article examines the position of the work of Amado in the Polish literary system, the political use made of his work, and the translations themselves.
