Abstract

This article tries to outline the relations between terminology and neology. These go back to the time when men began to attach names to concepts and referential elements of their surrounding world. The concept of neology is discussed, as well as its evolution, which, from the 1980s onwards, was governed by the increasing development of activities in the field of Terminology. The various processes through which terminological neology occurs are introduced next: derivation, composition, semantic transfer, loanwords from other languages, and shortenings of words and expressions. The article gives some examples of these, taken from the field of Artificial Intelligence.
