Abstract

The language used in specialty fields resorts to grammatical categories other than the noun, which are not properly dealt with by terminology, e.g. the verbs. This category is discussed in this article, which addresses the limitations of terminology in handling verbs, and proposes a description of these units within the framework of the ‘Explanatory and Combinational Lexicology’ devised by Mel’cuk et al. (1995). Using examples found in computing texts contained in a Portuguese corpus, this article argues that the knowledge of verbal units is as necessary and as important as the knowledge of nouns (terms) to the writing and translation of specialty texts.
