Abstract

The Norwegian folktales collected by P. Chr. Asbjørnsen and Jørgen Moe in the 19th century stand as a first approximation of the written standard to the language spoken in the rural districts of Central Norway, at the time when Danish was till the official language. Given the Norwegian character of the texts, typical of a by-gone time, the translation of its cultural framework for the benefit of the Brazilian reader of today represents a major challenge. At the same time, their translation represents a good ilustration of the inherent linguistic specificities which oppose Norwegian to Portuguese.

In the paper, an attempt is made to demonstrate the more salient structural and cultural differences which emerge in translations from Norwegian into Portuguese as a whole and very specifically in these folktales, including a proposed classification of the problems and discussing some of the solutions proposed by Francis H. Aubert in the anthology Askeladden & outras aventuras.
