Abstract

The video games market is a visibly growing industry in Brazil and, for this reason, game publishers understood the need of language localization of their games to Portuguese. Nevertheless, the literature about audiovisual translation for games is scarce. Thus, this paper aims at analyzing the subtitles of the game Batman: Arkham City based on technical and linguistic parameters and suggesting subtitles which meet these parameters. The technical parameters (Araújo, 2006) take into account the number of characters per second, the dwell time of the subtitles on the screen and the number of lines per subtitle. The linguistic parameters take into account the lexical choices and the division of sense units (Martinez, 2007; Hilgert, 2011). Finally, the paper points out the losses due to the lack of standardization and inappropriate lexical choices made by the subtitle translator
