Abstract

This article investigates the historical development of the interpretation of Brazilian indigenous languages through the intercultural relations in the country and its role in the current context. The methodology used is literature review, and one case study with an instrumental approach was included as an example. Different aspects of the problem are investigated, based on the history of oral translation in Brazil (WYLER 2003), the trajectory of indigenous languages in the Brazilian Amazon (FREIRE 2003), the interpreting models in the anthropological dimension (PÖCHHAKER 2002 and CRONIN 2002) and, finally, translation, globalization and minority languages (CRONIN 2003). According to the data analysis, the act of interpreting is still relevant for these communities. Therefore, this study theorizes about the specifc aspects of community interpreting for minority indigenous languages and its needs in a globalized world.

  • Maíra Monteiro Pinheiro, Especialista em Tradução e Interpretação de Conferências em Inglês/Português pela Universidade Gama Filho – Rio de Janeiro

    Bacharel e licenciada em Inglês e Literaturas pela UERJ (2007). Especialista em Tradução (2010) e Interpretação de Conferência (2013) de Inglês pela UGF. É tradutora e revisora de inglês e português, tendo atuado como professora de inglês, assistente em editoras, intérprete e coordenadora linguística de projetos de localização. Áreas de interesse: história da tradução e da interpretação, estudos culturais, línguas indígenas brasileiras.
