The death of Antonio Candido, in the centenary year of his birth, brought to the academy some ways to review the work of this one who was one of the greatest intellectuals that the country ever had. The purpose of this article is to make some reflections about the relation of the work of Antonio Candido with the teaching of literature, searching in different texts the teacher and critic's ballast, that discreetly and tenaciously, turned its action, in the classrooms and the texts, for the understanding of the human complexities represented in the literature, through a pedagogical practice that implies the social role of its public, future teachers.
