Maria Elsa da Rocha (1924-2007) foi uma das mais prolíficas contistas goesas de língua portuguesa do período pós-61. Teve larga produção no jornal A Vida de Margão, onde chegou a editar uma secção cultural, até que o jornal se transformasse em 1967 no diário concanim Divtti. Uma coletânea dos seus contos, intitulada Vivências Partilhadas, foi lançada em 2005. Os dois contos inéditos que aqui apresentamos exemplificam alguns dos paradoxos transversais à sua obra e que espelham bem a sensibilidade ambígua de uma certa elite intelectual de Goa: a sua profunda empatia pelas camadas subalternas do seu torrão natal em contraste com uma atitude conservadora sobre a sua sociedade altamente hierarquizada, uma visão de certa forma pós-colonializante, crítica do regime anterior e muitas vezes eivada de nacionalismo indiano, mas justaposta com um mundo de referências decorrentes do encontro colonial, profundamente arraigado na cultura indo-portuguesa, e um tom algo saudoso vis-à-vis dos tempos que já lá foram.
