Antonio Onorati and the literary polemic of Father Vieira in the 19th century

Abstract

In this paper, a relation is traced between a nineteenth-century edition of sermons of Father Antonio Vieira, The Portuguese Chrysostom (1878-90), organized by Father Antonio Onorati, and Vieira's reception at that time, especially since the commentaries of António Feliciano Castilho and Camilo Castelo Branco, who compared him unfavorably to Father Manuel Bernardes. Based on the analysis of the changes promoted by Onorati in the "Sermão da Sexagésima", we propose The Portuguese Chrysostom as an intervention in the public sphere of its time, portraying Vieira as a model of sacred oratory, in response to the preference for Bernardes' prose that was then being consolidated.

    Marcus De Martini holds a PhD in Literary Studies from the Federal University of Santa Maria (UFSM), where he is also an assistant professor in the Department of Vernacular Literature. He is currently a fellow of the Cnpq's Post-Doctoral Program in the Country (PDS/Cnpq), with the Graduate Program in Brazilian Literature at the University of São Paulo (USP), under the supervision of João Adolfo Hansen. He works mainly with the work of English writer John Donne (criticism and translation) and with the work of Father Antônio Vieira (especially his prophetic side). He is interested, however, in the literature produced between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries in general, and in the intersections between Catholicism and literature from the nineteenth to the early twentieth century, as well as in the relations between literature, rhetoric and teaching.

    Dario Trevisan is a PhD student in Brazilian Literature at the University of São Paulo (USP), where he is developing his doctoral thesis under the supervision of João Adolfo Hansen. During his master's degree, he studied the indexes of the most remarkable things added to the fifteen volumes of Padre Antônio Vieira's Sermões, and their relation to the Jesuit artes excerpendi of the seventeenth century.
