The indian epic in the poem O Rei de Benares by Fernando Leal (1846-1910)

Better known for his translations made from the French than for his literary compositions, Fernando Leal, is a writer that is important to study and to unmask not only for his peculiar linguistic style but also for the constant dialogic relationship among two cultures inside the literary man. In a special way, this study is focused in the analysis of the poem O Rei de Benares, written in Lisbon and aimed to a public of children. In fact, the poem is very rich in what concerns the theme and influenced by the Indian ancient epic brings new elements to literature resulting from the poet’s personal formation and coming from a coexistence of different cultures, Portuguese and Indian. Through a deep analysis and comparison of poetic texts we’ll underline the poem real sense and want to contribute to new comprehension of the man as a member of a multicultural community and as a dialogic human being.
