Memory, testimony, Citizen Kane.Abstract
Taking as a starting point the testimonies of several characters, this study
discusses how memory is architected in Citizen Kane (by Orson Welles, 1941). To do so, we assume the hypothesis that this memory works as a triangular relationship between mediatic knowledge, emotional disposition and the frame of the present. The mediatic knowledge was proposed by Baltar – from the perspective of the documentary, but here it is extended to fiction – is based on the character’s “self-fable making” when interviewed from the codes of representation provided by the media. The emotional disposition establishes emotion itself as provider of memory both in its capture and rescue. The third feature is based on the conditions of the existing time that transcends individuals and constitutes, beyond the will, significant impact on recall.
