Abstract

This paper makes an analysis of the movie La Vie et la Passion de Jesus Christ, directed by Ferdinand and produced between 1902 and 1905. This movie is also known as Pathé's Passion Play and this analysis also includes some photograms of Passion by Gaumont (directed by Alice Guy in 1903) used as an element of comparison. The comparative work aims to prove that certain scenes from both movies were shot purely for ornamental reasons, instead of meaning a representation of hierofanies, as it could have been imagined at first. These images are completely hollowed from any religious meaning and detached from any narrative, thus resembling a purely aesthetic element.
