Abstract

The objective of this article is to analyze images of the enunciator and the co-enunciator in a non-verbal speech that presents the cigarette as an emblematic element, as seen in Landowski’s theory of the ethos, such as in the perspective of Eggs, Amossy and Maingueneau. Starting by a journalistic photo published by Folha de S.Paulo newspaper, the modes of visibility are discussed, such as the construction of ethos and its communicational strength, and the scene of enunciation. Finally, we analyze the specific constructions of an ethos on the act of smoking.
