Abstract

This article aims to examine four distinct moments of the journalistic trajectory of Graciliano Ramos, in which the author focused on different aspects of cinematographic experience: in 1915, he wove a picture of the cinema in the effervescent capital of Rio; in the early 1920s, criticized the lack of decorum of the audience and the precariousness of the local cinema in one little city of the Alagoas state; in 1938, praised and rebuked at the same time certain aspects of the film Descobrimento do Brasil (1937), of Humberto Mauro; and in 1940, in one memorialistic writing, revealed how the arrival of film art in the northeast hinterland would have put an end to amateur theater. The specific analysis of each one of these texts allows us to discover unknown facets of the relationship between the novelist and the seventh art as well as bringing new elements to examine the interface between film and literature in Brazil.
