José Carlos Matos: political articulations and artistic engagement in Ceara's amateur theater (1972-1982)

This article analyzes the figure of José Carlos Matos and his political articulation power and artistic engagement in Ceará’s amateur theater during the Brazilian civil-military dictatorship. The text presents José Carlos Matos, the reasons for a study about his trajectory and the importance of amateur theater for the conquests and political articulation which unfolded in cultural public policies for Ceará. Our focus is from 1972, year of the premiere of the show O Romance do Pavão Mysterioso, by the Cooperativa de Teatro e Arte, directed by Matos, and 1982, year of his death. Therefore, we sought to understand the construction of the identity from the memory of José Carlos’s articulating, political, and intellectual figure, the political culture and the attachment to charismatic leaders, as well as the cultural and symbolic power from the Intellectual and Artistic Field.
